Brouwerij Rodenbach

Brouwerij Rodenbach is the undisputed master of Flemish red‑brown ale, a style defined by mixed fermentation, long oak ageing, and a balance of tartness and deep malt complexity. Founded in 1821 in Roeselare, Rodenbach has shaped this regional specialty more than any other brewery — to the point where “Rodenbach” is often used as shorthand for the entire style.

Rodenbach’s signature technique is its foeder ageing: huge oak vats, some more than a century old, where beer matures for months or years. The brewery then blends young beer with aged beer to achieve its trademark profile — bright acidity, red fruit notes, subtle oak, and a smooth, rounded finish.

Key beers include:

Rodenbach Classic,  the benchmark Flemish red: refreshing acidity, cherry and plum notes, gentle caramel malt, and a clean, balanced finish.

Rodenbach Grand Cru, a higher proportion of aged beer, resulting in deeper complexity, more pronounced oak, and richer fruit character.

Rodenbach Alexander, a legendary cherry‑infused variant combining tart red fruit with elegant foeder depth.

Rodenbach Caractère Rouge, a modern, premium blend aged with cherries, raspberries, and cranberries for intense fruit complexity.

Rodenbach’s beers are unique in Belgium: neither lambic nor sour ale in the modern craft sense, but a distinct, historic style shaped by controlled mixed fermentation and careful blending. The result is a portfolio defined by elegance, balance, and a signature red‑fruit acidity that has made Rodenbach one of the world’s most respected breweries.
